GiVE NOLA DAY

Jefferson SPCA

About this Organization

The Jefferson SPCA wants to help the Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services give every animal that comes into the shelter a chance at a happy ending. We have supported JPAWS by sending animals to veterinary cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons and ophthalmologists when needed. Jefferson SPCA operates Louisiana's largest and most ambitious spay and neuter program. Through that program, we have helped spay and neuter over 119,000 dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. Of those surgeries, 49,000 were community/feral cats thanks to the help of our volunteer cat trappers. We also like to help with veterinary care for community/feral cats so every animal regardless if they are in a home, is healthy and happy in Jefferson Parish. We are committed to the treatment and eradication of heartworms in pets that would otherwise be euthanized at our parish animal shelter. Annually, we spend about $40,000 covering the cost of heartworm treatment for dogs that are adopted from JPAWS and heartworm positive. There is clearly an overpopulation issue in our parish. We know that we can't adopt our way out of this problem. Through our spay/neuter program, we are making a difference.
