Be Loud was founded in 2019 by two teachers whose students were disengaged from schoolwork and needed a way for authentic expression. We created a radio station so teens could creatively write, interview, and produce radio, using technology to build community. We invite teens, centering Black youth, to tell their stories, using radio to express themselves. The reality is that teen mental health issues and isolation are on the rise, and it is vital to support programs like Be Loud, that create spaces for youth to connect, build confidence, and belong. Research shows that providing opportunities for young people to have agency and express themselves about issues that impact them is an important protective factor against the negative mental health impacts of isolation and exposure to violence. Be Loud invites young people to tell their stories, express themselves, becoming positive agents of change. While many of our systems ask young people to "be quiet," we ask them to Be Loud. We are raising funds to support: -Summer Camp- Over half of our youth are on full scholarship. -Wednesday Night Live- A safe space for teens to come and create.
